Using the System

This system is an exciting and valuable source of information, however it is provided "as is" and may well have errors and omissions. Please read about the types of errors which can occur by clicking on the link: Disclaimer

Data is provided in the form of "layers" on the map which can be turned on or off by left clicking in the "check boxes" within the list of layers. For help and information on how to work with layers, click on the following link: Layer Concept Summary

Basic Functions

Different sets of layers appear at different zoom scales, which can be set using the tools on the tool bar . For information on using the tools click on the following link: Toolbar Summary

Links to the Layer Button Help and the Toolbar Button Help are provided on the bar in the map window

The General Help link takes you to the Autodesk MapGuide Help website which has more detailed information about Geographic Information Systems generally and the use of the Autodesk Mapguide Viewer in particular, which is the software that maps.barnet.gov.uk uses.  It has been modified to make it more user friendly by our software developers  Allied Integrated Technologies

The Select function is useful for generating a report of addresses. With the address detail layer turned on, and the map zoomed in sufficiently so that the red address dots appear. The Select, radius function allows you to draw a circle and when you drop the circle all the items within it will be highlighted. Move to the View function and by clicking report, a web page of the addresses selected will be displayed. Those can be selected, cut and pasted into a spreadsheet for further work.  The Select, polygon function allows you to draw an area for selection of whatever shape or area you chose. The function works by click move click move and double click to end. Once selected the View Report works in the same way.

View, Distance presents a distance measuring tool, which will measure a single link or a route. The total route length being given in the bottom half of the yellow box and the last link length in the top half.

The Help, Preferences function allows you to change the units and also to have the co-ordinates of the mouse position displayed as well as turning on or off the map scale and width.  These appear in a grey coloured bar at the bottom of the page.
